Actually, Matt, the most vigorous calls for a draft over the last few years have been from antiwar activists. The theory goes that we fattened, lazy bastards would actually get up and do something to end the war if it wasn’t just people who couldn’t afford college or couldn’t find any other way out of the ghetto who were sent off to kill and die.
I actually rather like the idea, but that’s easy for me to say, as I am 4-F due to a congenital birth defect.

I suppose that’s one way to go, though one could just as easily argue that it reflects a certain disrespect for human life.

In fact, and I hate to harp on it, but if you call for the draft because you think it’ll help you organize people against the Iraq war, and the draft goes into effect, then aren’t you basically organizing people to protest a situation that you made worse?
Tactics like these literally put human beings in the line of fire, and when the desired end is to stop a war and prevent further loss of life, that’s just callous and hypocritical.
