I don’t know. I don’t think I’ll be trying this. However, I won’t be buying an espresso machine either. Why are they so expensive?

It’s because of all the pressure from the steam. You don’t want pressure vessels being made on the cheap.

I have my doubts about that. Yes, it’s true you need high pressure, but neither the materials or technology are expensive. I think it’s a market thing.

Well, what do you consider expensive?

I think $500 is pretty expensive. I know you can get machines cheaper than that but I’m just saying $500 isn’t even that much when it comes to espresso machines.

Given how much a coffee lover will spend on coffee alone, $500 doesn’t seem unreasonable for a machine that will last a good number of years.
Also, I believe the bulk of the cost goes into the pump, which has to meet fairly specific design requirements (i.e. noise level, size, consistency of pressure, etc).

I know, I’m just lamenting the fact that there are a sufficient number of people out there who will pay $500+.

Seriously, especially since all you need is some tubes. And you can use the DIY version as a weapon I bet.

No, that DIY version is really too ghetto. I thought it was going to be a little more involved.
