  1. Is it illegal not to vote? I’m guessing no.

From personal experience, I think election canada should do more to educate ethnic groups on voting. I’ve glanced at the persian news papers and I think I saw one or two articles on the upcoming elections, but not much about voting or where to vote or how to vote etc.

It’d be interesting if in the next election Stats Canada would have a question about your ethnicity on the ballet, to get a sense of what groups are missing from the larger picture.

Anyways, I’m sure they can do more to boost voting numbers.

On another note, did anyone hear about how the schools across Toronto/Ontario (I can’t remember which) held their own elections yesterday and the students voted Liberals in, and the green party came in second! Too bad young kids can’t vote, I’m sure the results would be very different.

  2. That actually would be an interesting statistic to collect. That said, I’m not so sure immigrants vote any less frequently than non-immigrants. The various political parties wouldn’t waste their time courting votes from various ethnic groups if this was the case. The Tamil radio station is very active when it comes to telling Tamil people who to vote for. God damn Tamil people always voting Liberal like god damn sheep. Damn it.

The security guard in our building didn’t vote because he sleeps during the day and works at night. I told him you can get an early voting ballot, and he said, “When would I have time to even pick that up?”

I think really though, people just don’t care. The vote in our riding was close, but in many ridings this isn’t the case. When I lived in Scarborough I could vote or not vote and it wouldn’t matter in the least. The riding is so locked down the Liberals could run a monkey in my Scarborough riding and it’d win. In such a situation, what’s the point of even leaving your house?

And then there are people like Mezan. God damn Mezan.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
