Teaching grads learn a lesson: jobs are dwindling. ⇒
23 November 2007, mid-morning
"Only 41 per cent of 2006 graduates found regular jobs in one year, a figure that drops to just one-quarter for elementary teachers, according to the Ontario College of Teachers." Damn that number is low.
This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

On second though, those numbers make sense. Sure 12,000 people graduate and expect to get jobs, but as a friend just told me, “I wouldn’t employ 3/4 of the people who are graduating with me.” Just because they have a piece of paper it doesn’t mean they should teach.

Yeah – it’s really hard. The stats don’t surprise me one bit. I have tons of friends who were/are still on supply lists or took any LTOs they could. Many went to private schools or to some international schools in areas that weren’t in demand. I was LUCKY.

I hate to say this, but retired teachers need to stop double dipping and let new blood in.
I’m tired of seeing retired teachers coming back for maternity leaves, supply work and extended leaves.
Let the young teachers get their feet in the door ferchristsake!
With positions dwindling, it makes it an even worse situation.
