A painting of me

The goal of the Peekabooty Project is to create a product that can bypass the nation-wide censorship of the World Wide Web practiced by many countries. ⇒

Did you know that this site can't be read in China? This link was found via Ask.Mefi.

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. Sounds good in theory, but I worry in practice. Basically you are asking the world to help citizens of other countries break the law. In countries where Internet access and information are restricted, getting caught breaking even seemingly minor laws can be life (or at least livelihood) threatening.

On the other hand, people know the risk they are taking in utilizing such software. We all have to make our own choices as to how we handle oppression.

  2. Well your site gets live banned at the Adelaide State Library (I have asked for a human review). So I am not really surprised you are banned in China.

  3. I knew about Chinese censorship… I have to give them credit though, they’re doing one heck of a job trying to control comething as untamed as the internet. I strongly oppose their policy, but I’m not Chinese nor do I live in China.

Still though, their policy sets a de facto acceptance that reverberated around the world as it being “OK” to censor people…

Don't be shy, you can comment too!

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
