I wish I could say I was shocked, but I don't expect much from the US army. That's some sadistic shit. This link was found via Metafilter.

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. that’s insanity. he walked in to talk to them…I hope the US military court does a better job of metering out justice than they did with the pilot in that Cdn “friendly-fire” incident.

  2. Can you imagine how much stuff goes down in Iraq that will never make the light of day. I don’t think I’d find the US so obnoxious if they would just give up on pretending to be some sort of bastion of freedom.

  3. ”...the investigation indicates the death was directly related to the non-standard interrogation methods...”

That’s a nice euphemism for torture.

  4. An interesting argument taken from The Record of the Paper: How the New York Times Misreports US Foreign Policy

Col. David A. Teeples, who then commanded the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, told the court he believed the “claustrophobic technique” was both approved and effective. It was used before, and for some time after, Mowhoush’s death, according to sources familiar with the interrogation operation.

The US has ratified both Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and Declaration on the Protection of All Persons from Being Subjected to Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment

According the the US Constituion, such treaties are the “Supreme Law of the land”. Hence, torture is unconstitutional. Therefore, the Colonel is volating this oath to “support and defend the Constitution”.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
