Daniel Raeburn's Babies.

The New Yorker: Daniel Raeburn's story about his daughter's still birth is one of the most depressing things I've read in a while. Thankfully, there is a much happier update to the story. (The first story really isn't for the faint of heart; you may want to skip it and just read the second. Seriously.) This link was found via Kottke.
I thought it was amazing. The first story in particular is so very intense. It left me feeling like I had read a Hemmingway novel. I posted the links on MetaFilter, where there are some good comments.

I read that first story when it ran in the New Yorker. It was in my first issue and made me so glad I’d subscribed. It’s intense, yes, but beautiful. It does what great writing should be able to do: make you feel things, even if they aren’t comfortable things. I am so glad to read the second story and find the happier follow up.
