Walking while black. ⇒
16 October 2006, lunch time
Walking down Yonge with Patrick the night before Caribana was set to begin, the two of us saw this small army of cops marching ahead of us. I guess the police were trying to make their presence felt, and this seems to have worked, since this year's Caribana wasn't marred by any serious violence. That said, we did see about 20 cops stop and chat with a group of black teenagers who were loitering on the steps of some building that faced on to Yonge. When you are chatting with 20 or cops, I imagine it's a bit intimidating. I've been asked what I was doing a few times in Scarborough, since my friends and I had a habit of hanging around in parks doing nothing.
