- Mechanisms of Exclusion.
#People who haven’t been excluded always say “The tech industry’s a meritocracy! Anybody who wants to participate isn’t barred from doing so!” So I thought it’d be useful to illustrate exactly how exclusion happens — not through a malicious, deliberate act, but through men not realizing they’re doing it.
- Did 'Star Wars' become a toy story? Producer Gary Kurtz looks back.
Kurtz and Lucas collaborated on the first two films. He left after The Empire Strikes Back because he could tell Lucas was becoming a serious-ass hack.

An interesting look at some of the dysfunction at HP.

- Washington, We Have a Problem.
(via MetaFilter) #How broken is Washington? Beyond repair? A day in the life of the president reveals that Barack Obama’s job would be almost unrecognizable to most of his predecessors—thanks to the enormous bureaucracy, congressional paralysis, systemic corruption (with lobbyists spending $3.5 billion last year), and disintegrating media. Inside the West Wing, the author talks to Obama’s top advisers about the challenge of playing the Washington game, ugly as it has become, even while their boss insists they find a way to transcend it.
- Parents in Barrie suspect Wi-Fi making kids sick
The parents should just give their kids tin-foil hats: problem solved! Also, it’s almost too easy to make fun of Barrie.

- "A recent drowning tragedy in Shreveport, Louisiana has brought to light a startling statistic in America: a majority of black youth can not swim."
In Canada I have read that immigrant children at 5 times less likely to know how to swim — like me.

- What Happened to Yahoo?
You know I hate linking to Paul Graham, because he bugs me, but this essay is quite enjoyable. “Yahoo had two problems Google didn’t: easy money, and ambivalence about being a technology company.” Sounds like a couple companies I can think of.

- New fraud charge against woman who faked cancer.
“Volunteers claim Ashley Kirilow raised $20,000, but she says it was less than $5,000.” I like how she thinks raising less than $5000 somehow makes what she did less horrible. The original investigation into this story by the Star is really good. She sounds like a train wreck. (Sadly, this has come up before. What is wrong with people?)

I like the web design. The photographs are a bit uninspired. Every single photo looks to be shot at f/1.2 or something. They make me feel like my eyes are going bad.

- The Beer-Every-Mile SF Half Marathon: 13 Beers in 13Â Miles.
Several of you told me that I was “going to die†if I drank 13 beers while running the San Francisco Half Marathon. I did not die. I puked three times, blacked out for miles 11 and 12, and needed five hours to finish. This is my story.
This is awesome. I’m impressed he finished the race at all.
